My husband had gone to war and all I got from him was one letter.
These were the exact words that were in the letter.
Dear Mary,
I hope you are all doing fine – I’m not. I have to live with huge rats and tiny lice and the sergeant barking orders at me. You know my friend Fred; he was shot mere hours ago. The enemy is still shooting at us but, whatever happens, remember me. Give my love to Peter, I love you.
From Paul.
Those were the last words I ever heard from him again.

  1. Morgan, such a sad but, unfortunately, frequent wartime story. Your story was an excellent depiction of the desperation of war. Very good job with a difficult subject. Keep up the good effort.
